[ Message from Joe Honda ]
“What inspired me to become a motor sports journalist was the opening of Fuji Speedway in 1966 and my encounter with Jackie Stewart (three times world champion Formula 1 racing driver) at Japan Indy held in October of the same year. Jackie and I were born in the same year, 1939, Holding admiration for Jackie who was the same age as me, and placing my hopes in him, I dived into the world of motor sports photography. In February 1967, I shipped out my Toyota Corolla from Yokohama port. I got myself on board a Russian ship on March 17th and then took the Trans-Siberian Railway to go to Marseilles to collect my Corolla. I was 27 years old at the time and envisioned a scene at Fuji Speedway where Toyota and Honda would face each other off in F1 Grand Prix racing, a dream that came true 40 years later. At the same time I was also forecasting the future of Japanese automobile industry as it has developed today.
For me, Tokyo Concours d’Elegance is a kind of Commodore Perry’s black ships of today. I am very interested in the state of the automobile industry during this peaceful era, observing the battles of wits between automotive giants of Japan and the rest of the world. We have a chance to view here at this event nearly 100-years of history of prestigious cars manufactured in the leading automotive countries of Europe. I am really honoured to have a chance to hold my workshops in this memorable event, as it represents another important chapter in my life focused on cars”.
