Paul Goldsmith, Chairman of Tokyo Concours d'Elegance comments

Welcome to the 3rd Tokyo Concours d'Elegance. Asia's largest and most prestigious classic car Concours d'Elegance, supported this year by Diners Club International. I have been responsible for organizing these events since 2007.

Europeans and Americans have been celebrating the timeless beauty of outstanding classic cars for many years. The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este was established in Italy in 1929 and Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the US started in 1950. These have become the premiere events on the international calendar. Tokyo is establishing itself as the Asian equivalent.

These classic car events attract not only car enthusiasts but people with an appreciation of style and elegance. For example many women who have little interest in cars get a big thrill looking at these moving pieces of art.

These beautiful machines are best viewed in attractive locations that reflect the polished brilliance of these moving works of art, so being outside on grass is the perfect setting, hence this year's venue Shiokase Koen in Odaiba.

I would like to thank Diners Club for its support for this year's event. Their enthusiasm and understanding of the cultural value of gathering rare and precious classic cars together is quite special. Diners Club members are sure to have a wonderful time at this year's event viewing many fabulous classic, contemporary and future cars and enjoying some unique experiences. The general public will also be impressed with the large selection of very special cars we will gather.

With an eye on the impact of cars on the environment this year's Tokyo Concours d'Elegance will be donating a portion of profits raised to "Save the Taiga Forest" in Russia where tigers are in danger of extinction due to deforestation. This is our way of giving something back to society.

To conclude my remarks I'd like to sum up why Tokyo Concours d'Elegance is important and relevant in this day and age with a comment from one European auto maker which so aptly states that "The future needs heritage".

Marco Reverdito, President & CEO, Representative Director Citi Cards Japan, Inc. comments

It is a great honour for Diners Club Japan to be the title sponsor of this prestigious event, the Tokyo Concours D'Elegance.

A fantastic roster of vehicles has been selected for the pleasure of all automobile fans across Japan.

Over the decades, technology behind these machines has greatly evolved - no more cables and sparks under the hood, but chips and LED lights.

One key aspect though has remained constant: the passion that inspired these manufacturers to produce works of art, capable to make our heart beat accelerate when we hear the music of a V12 Ferrari engine or we admire the sleek lines of the latest Maserati GT Convertible. These automobiles are much more than machines that take us from point A to point B - they are delivering to their drivers an exhilarating experience throughout the trip.

The history of Diners Club shares many elements in common with the best automotive companies in the world. We celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, as the first credit card launched in Japan. Our technology has changed too since 1960, but our service continues to be inspired by the very same principles: to provide our customers with unique privileges, to help them live their lives to the fullest through our exclusive benefits in dining, cultural, golf, travel, and entertainment spaces. We take personal pride when our customers are delighted by the experience that our credit card delivers - we too want to make sure that our customers enjoy the trip as much as reaching their destination.

Event Overview

Concours d'Elegance is a traditional car event that has taken place in Europe for over 80 years. The classic cars exhibited compete for their design, along with prestige, condition, and historic significance.

The focus on classic cars has been increasing over the years and classic car events such as; "Villa d'Este" of Italy (1929 ~ ) and "Pebble Beach" of the United States (1950 ~ ) have become an annual event in the West. This is the third time for the Japan event to be held and it is our aim to establish a solid position for this Concours in Japanese society.

This year's event will be held at Shiokaze Park, Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan, where we hope to project the beauty of classic cars in such an attractive setting.

The theme of this year's event is "the Past", "the Present" and "the Future" of cars. Car production is facing a big turning point with eco cars and concept cars being produced using the highest technology available today. These cars will be displayed along with classic cars and modern luxury cars. Through this diverse gathering of cars the event offers the opportunity for everyone to understand the history of cars, and the thinking behind how cars may develop in the future.

The 50 Concours nominee cars have been produced between 1910~1975 and will be displayed according to their year of production, competing on their sense of elegance and style. The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will be on display during the event as well as a selection of the famous "300SL Gullwings". In addition, within the event Alfa Romeo will celebrate its 100th year Anniversary with a picnic and display of its latest models. Looking to the future, Japanese car makers will show their latest eco and concept cars. On July 24th, judging will take place by a panel of car experts along with a public vote for their "Best of Show" choice.
