D1 1961: Aston Martin DB4GT

When the DB4GT was manufactured it competed against the DB4 Saloon for the title of world's fastest sports car. The DB4GT was actually made from the DB4 Saloon by making the wheelbase shorter by 13cm and converting it into a 2-seater for racing use. Production started in l959 and 75 were manufactured. Its straight 6 DOHC 3.7L engine had a twin-plug head and 3 twin-choke Weber carburetors, enabling it to achieve 302ps. The body was designed by Italian Touring, just like the DB4, using the company's patented body structure "Superleggera." The DB4GT is 80kg lighter than the DB4 saloon. This is achieved through the use of aluminum panels for the body, which also make handling easier and produces higher performance than might be expected from the specification differences. The DB4GT became a symbolic model for the entire DB series. Many features were handed down to succeeding models such as the standard DB4/5/6. Plexiglass-covered headlights and the location of meters on the dashboard panel are examples of the features handed down from the DB4GT to its successors.
