B4 1936: Bugatti Type 57

The Bugatti T57 was engineered by Jean Bugatti, eldest son and successor to company founder Ettore Bugatti. Jean exhibited his promising talent as an engineer with this model, designed to be a super sports car by combining a straight 8-cylinder SOHC 3.3 L engine, made for the T49, with a DOHC head - which his father refused to use. This French car is regarded as the best luxury car of the post vintage era. Jean designed the bodies of most Bugatti by himself, including this Ventoux. However, the coachwork was done by Gangloff, a coachbuilder who had worked with Bugatti for many years. The T57 is comparable to the Rolls-Royce 25/30 HP of the same period. In spite of its super-fine quality and high price, some 680 T57s were sold, in what was a great success for an 8-cylinder Bugatti. This entry was brought to Japan in the l950s by the late Bob Hussey. Succeeding classic car fans have carried on his legacy by looking after this wonderful car. It is considered one of Japan's most important automotive cultural heritage pieces.
