Welcome to Tokyo Concours d'Elegance ® Official Website.
In October 2007, Tokyo Concours d'Elegance was held in Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi, Tokyo.
AIthough a number of classic car events have been held in Japan, Concours d'Elegance is one of the lesser known contests in Japan.

<a href='http://www.concours.jp/media/info/about-01.jpg' rel='lightbox[grp]' title='Best of Show (Tokyo Concours d'Elegance 2007): 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental D.H.C. by Carlton'>

Concours d'Elegance is an automobile competition that judges the designs and styles of elegant, sumptuous classic cars. It started in Paris in the 1920s, the period just after "Belle Epoque." At that
time, Paris, a city full of art and hedonism, became the world's curtural capital. In the up-scale social Parisian circles, people became infatuated with the extravagance of automobiles, the forefront of all the latest technologies. Owners of these new machines would gather at beautiful venues, such as a castle by a lake or a garden with immaculate lawns to show off their gorgeous vehicles. This competition was a product of the unique time in the automobile industry when luxurious cars were either made to order or the production was very limited in number. After Concourse d'Elegance
won the hearts of people in France, it went over the Alps and reached Italy, which also had a passion for the arts.

<a href='http://www.concours.jp/media/info/about-02.jpg' rel='lightbox[grp]' title='Best of Show by Public (Tokyo Concours d'Elegance 2007) : 1937 Jaguar SS100'>

French Concours d'Elegance were all about integrated elegant style. Cars were typically accompanied by a beautiful woman in haute couture clothes with gorgeous jewelry, a magnificent dog, such as an Afghan hound or Russian wolfhound, and a white-gloved chauffer. On the other hand, the focus of the Italian concours was purely the beauty of bespoke cars and cars with a very limited production. These contest provided many carrozzerias (automobile coach builders) that existed at the time in Italy with a great opportunity to show off their craftsmanship.
Concours d'Elegance was very popular all over Europe and the United States until 1960s. Many competitions ceased to exist when bespoke automobiles were no longer popular for many reasons. However, in 1980s, Concours d'Elegance was brought back by popular demand. Today these events have become the most exclusive and prestigious classic car events worldwide.
Tokyo Concours d'Elegance is in the Italian style as are many revived Concours d'Elegance held since 1980s. The focal point of this show is hand-made classic cars, featuring automobiles from
the early stage of the automotive industry through to bespoke cars of the 1970s. At the 1st Tokyo Concours d'Elegance in 2007, knowledgeable judges as well as spectators examined the beautiful and rare automobiles displayed on the rush lawns at Tokyo Midtown. Cars were judged on their level of restoration, originality and design.

<a href='http://www.concours.jp/media/info/about-03.jpg' rel='lightbox[grp]' title='Bugatti Veyron (Tokyo Concours d'Elegance 2007)'>

There are three notable Concours d'Elegance events held around the world; Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este by Lake Como in Northern Italy, Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the West Coast in the U.S., and the Louis Vuitton Classic, last held in 2004. Each of them has its own unique characteristics and they have co-existed with a healthy amount of rivalry. Tokyo Concours d'Elegance hopes to be the newest top quality international competition. As Concours d'Elegance
is also known as a celebration of car designs it is hoped that by holding an event in Tokyo it will contribute to the improvement of automobile design in Japan.

<a href='http://www.concours.jp/media/info/about-04.jpg' rel='lightbox[grp]' title='Tokyo Midtown (Tokyo Concours d'Elegance 2007)'>

It is a little known fact that there are many Concours-quality classic cars in Japan. Many of these car owners have been eagerly waiting for an opportunity such as Tokyo Concours d'Elegance to bring their wonderful cars out in public. Tokyo Concours d'Elegance provides them with the forum.
We sincerely hope that you will enjoy this Tokyo Concours d'Elegance.

From the l960s onwards automobile manufacturing became a major industry. The rise of manufactunng costs and mass-production systems put in place no longer allowed carmakers to make cars as they had in the past.
However some engineers were able to express their freewheeling ideas by making a limited number of luxury and super sports cars.
Immediately following WWII, the automobile industry went through a sea change. Front and rear fenders were integrated into one-piece solid bodies. There also followed a wave of engineering changes towards monocoque construction with the expectation of mass production in the near future. The current shifted rapidly and hugely in this period and many engineers throughout the world aimed for dominance by tackling a variety of different challenges.

Storm and Stress
The automobile industry in the l930s shared many characteristics with "Storm and Stress", the late 18th century German literature movement. This was the time for distinctive individuality and extreme emotions to be freely explored. Most of the core engineering technology used today emerged one after another in the 1930s and 40c. People were particularly obsessed with speed and making multi-cylinder engines with superchargers as standard equipment. This obsession was also pursued in the area of design as demonstrated in the worldwide popularity of streamline-shaped vehicles.
The 1910s through to the l930s marked the years of the golden age for the automobile industry. Engineenng technology was still in its infancy and the best and the brightest were drawn into the automobile industry with great ambitions. They tried to put various ideas into engineering applications. Car designs also went through a
series of trials in terms of styles and the use of different materials.
The “Speciale “ with Ferrari’s founder’s name
The Enzo Ferrari had its debut following the 288GTO, F40 and F50 in the year of 2002. It is a high-tech road-car designed to be driven on the street. Carrying its founder’s name, the Enzo features cutting edge technology from Formula 1 which gives the car amazing handling and performance. The aggressive styling was penned by the then chief stylist of Pininfarina,
Mr. Kiyoyuki Okuyama. The Enzo we have on display here features the prototype styling which is the same as the car shown at the press conference held in July 2007. A rather special Enzo.

One of Leonardo Fioravanti’s masterpieces, featuring the lines of his classics.
This car was produced using the 308GTV as its base to comply with Group B homologation　rules, enforced for races of the 1980’s by the FIA. It is a Ferrari factory “ Speciales” related to the later model Enzo. From a styling point of view, it has the original 250GTO detailing with slits on the rear fender wings. The “O” of the GTO is from the Italian word Omologato which means Homologation in English. Ferrari brought the design of the original GTO of the ‘60s into a new era. This car became known as the “hit-maker” of the automobile styling world, and can be considered to be one of Fioravanti’s greatest masterpieces.

The best racing GT Ferrari
This GTO is the homologation model based on the 250GT SWB produced in
1962, when Ferrari had ambitions to conquer the FIA GT Class. The car was designed and engineered by the genius Giotto Bizzarrini. The aerodynamics of the SWB have been refined and the V12 engine of the 250TR (Testa Rossa) installed. Ferrari’s plan became reality and the car won the FIA GT Class Title for three consecutive years from 1962 to 1964. In 1964, there were only 3 of the Series 2 models produced, each having the latest aerodynamic body. The car displayed here was updated in May　1963, and modified to the Series 2. Hence it is called the 63/64.
